First advertising pillar with green roof

At the end of September, Rosemarie Heilig, Head of the Department of the Environment, inaugurated the first advertising pillar with a green roof at Willy-Brandt-Platz together with Dirk Geßner, Managing Director of Ströer Deutsche Städte Medien GmbH.

Heat-resistant greenery with robust sedum plants was planted on two square metres of the pillar as well as on five others around the Zeil.

"At first, this is certainly a small area that is being additionally greened here in a test run," said Heilig. "But it is also a nice advertisement for the topic, an eye-catcher on the advertising pillar, and if this test is successful, then more of the 1000 advertising pillars in the city can receive a green roof. And all in all, these are small steps towards improving the climate in the city.

Another effect: insects also benefit from the Frankfurt canopy. Especially in the city centre, they are looking for so-called stepping stones to move between their habitats. "The new species and biotope protection concept has given us clear indications here," Rosemarie Heilig emphasised, "which is why this project comes just at the right time." The eight to twelve sedum species on a two m² area provide an insect and bee pasture over the entire vegetation period in an otherwise rather sealed environment. In addition, the vegetated areas are able to both store rainwater and deal with heavy rainfall events. 50 to 70 per cent of precipitation is evaporated.

"Ströer manages over 1,000 advertising pillars in Frankfurt. With the "Frankfurter Haube", we are starting the greening of advertising pillar covers here for the first time in Germany. We are pleased to start this campaign at Willy-Brandt-Platz, one of the most famous squares in Frankfurt. The more 'green islands' there are in the city, the more they serve not least as habitats for insects. We hope that this campaign will also inspire many more people to become active and green their house roofs or facades as part of the support programme initiated by the City of Frankfurt," says Dirk Geßner, Managing Director of Ströer Deutsche Städte Medien GmbH.

The locations of the advertising pillars with the "Frankfurt bonnet" are Willy-Brandt-Platz, Goethestraße/Große Bockenheimer Straße, Braubachstraße/Domstraße, Roßmarkt/Salzhaus, Rathenauplatz/Goethestraße and Zeil/Klingerstraße.
