The aim of the partners is to push nature-oriented solutions in the city area. Together with SWB Bus und Bahn and the company Selders, one of the bee-friendly plant roofs has now been presented in Tannenbusch.
Mayor Katja Dörner, together with Ströer Managing Director Hermann Meyersick and Anja Wenmakers, Managing Director of SWB Bus und Bahn, provided information about the advantages of green roofs for bus stops. Theo Selders presented the method developed by his company.
"The plant-covered bus shelters illustrate in a charming way that even the greening of relatively small areas can make ecological sense," said Katja Dörner. "The more 'green islands' we have in the city, the more they serve as stepping stones connecting habitats of insects and other species. That's why I hope the green bus stops will inspire more people to green their roof or a facade. Owners of privately or commercially used buildings can receive subsidies of up to 50 percent from the city for green roofs or facades," the mayor emphasized. Further information on the subsidy program is available at www.bonn.de/klimafoerderung.
Anja Wenmakers added: "A total of now nine bus stops have a green roof, two will follow this year and next year we are looking forward to another ten greened bus shelters. For the smart green city, we are also pushing ahead with electromobility. But the municipal utility group is also providing green solutions for the climate-neutral city in other ways: We are providing photovoltaic systems on public roofs and planting thousands of trees in the city forest. We provide Bonn residents with green and smart services for a climate-friendly and energy-efficient everyday life."
Alexander Stotz, CEO Ströer Media Deutschland GmbH, explains the reasons for Ströer's commitment: "Ströer drives local, sustainable change with smart communication and infrastructure solutions. The aim is to support cities in resilient, environmentally friendly urban development. Greening concepts are part of Ströer's sustainability strategy and municipal cooperation with the Federal City and Stadtwerke Bonn."
Bees and other insects can find food on the roof of the Löbestraße bus stop at Bad Godesberg station, which was greened in September 2020. Food for insects and shade on hot summer days are now provided by the green passenger shelters at these locations:
Two more bus shelters will receive a plant roof in 2021. These locations have not yet been determined. On all roofs, sedum binds fine dust and uses rainwater. Sedum is an evergreen thick-leaf plant whose different species bloom at different times. Around ten different plants are part of the repertoire. They provide nectar-rich flowers for insects from May to October.
