The city of Fürth has given the green light for its innovative parking guidance system. In the future, six digital city information displays from media company Ströer will inform road users about parking availability in Fürth. This marks the start of a pilot project that is unique in Germany, combining modern traffic information, sustainability, and existing infrastructure.
From now on, an additional line of information will be displayed below the regular content on screens throughout the city, showing the current occupancy of Fürth's parking garages in real time. The simple, clear display of the respective capacities shows drivers how many parking spaces are available in a clearly visible manner directly at the roadside. The occupancy data for the eight parking garages and their five operators, infra, Parkone, ContiPark, APCOA, and Goldbeck, will be summarized every 60 seconds via a portal developed in-house by the municipal utility company infra fürth. This information has been available on the website parken-fuerth.de, operated by infra, since September 2024. The occupancy rates of all car parks will be displayed alternately on all screens. The Stadthalle car park will also be connected to the system once the renovation work has been completed.
"For us as the city of Fürth, the consolidated display of car park occupancy rates in cooperation with infra and the car park operators in one place at parken-fuerth.de was an important milestone. We are therefore all the more delighted to be able to bring this data directly to the streets for citizens and visitors to our city of Fürth as part of a nationwide pilot project in cooperation with Ströer,” says Horst Müller, Economic Affairs Officer for the City of Fürth.
“The project is a pilot project – not only in Fürth, but nationwide. It is a prime example of how existing digital infrastructure can be used intelligently. We are delighted that the city is using our digital media to guide drivers through Fürth. Together with the city, we are creating added value for road users and contributing to the promotion of sustainable mobility,” says Alexander Stotz, CEO of Ströer Media Deutschland GmbH.
The parking guidance system will be tested during a three-year pilot period. The aim is to reduce inner-city traffic, make it easier to find parking spaces, and at the same time contribute to sustainability. By integrating the system into existing city information systems, Fürth, in cooperation with infra, is demonstrating how smart solutions can be implemented with minimal resources.
