Bus stops in Braunschweig with green roofs

In Braunschweig, Braunschweiger Verkehrs-GmbH (BSVG) and Ströer have realised a sustainable and green project: The roofs of two bus stops have been greened. Various types of sedum and robust plants are now growing at the "Nordstraße" and "Messegelände" stops. These green oases serve as micro-habitats for insects and, thanks to different flowering times, provide food for the small inhabitants almost all year round. The project thus skilfully combines urban infrastructure with ecological benefits.

"We are delighted that we can make a small contribution to greater nature conservation and sustainability with the green roofs," says BSVG Managing Director Jörg Reincke. Sedum species in particular store water with their thick fleshy leaves and cool the air when the water evaporates. The roofs are constructed in such a way that the plants are not washed down even when it rains. They can also store up to 24 litres of rainwater per square metre.

"The greening of bus stops and advertising pillars is an important building block in the further development of public infrastructure. The roofs of bus stops may only be small green islands - but in our city centres, some of which are heavily sealed, it is important to use every opportunity for more greenery. Greening concepts are therefore part of our municipal cooperation. With our digital city media, we are already enabling sustainable citizen communication," says Alexander Stotz, CEO of Ströer Media Deutschland GmbH.
